Kianjau Education Program
One of the reasons that not more children go to school, is the lack of food. Despite the fact that education is free, some children still don’t go to school because they lack the funds for school uniforms, shoes or a desk. The Food Program tries to get these children to go to school by providing these things for them as well as a meal a day.
The Food Program also tries to keep children off the streets during school holidays. There is a tendency for children to get caught up in begging, glue sniffing or even crime and prostitution during the school holidays. Sometimes parents or caretakers send children out to beg during holidays. By continuing the Food Program during school holidays we are trying to do something about this.
The current Food Program is carried out at a primary school in the Kiandutu slum. The school’s name is: Kianjau Primary School and it has 930 pupils.
Thanks to “Stichting Cucu” and “Plan Nederland” we have been able to supply 52 children with a meal a day from april until september 2006. In october 2006 “Stichting Cucu” extended the program with another 6 months until april 2007. The number of children getting a meal a day was raised to 130. Since July 2007 the Turing Foundation has joined stichting Cucu and Macheo in this effort and now we are providing lunches for all 930 children.
